Baton Rouge Without a Car

Baton Rouge is easier with a car, but a short visit without one is possible if you plan around geography rather than trying to cover the entire metropolitan area.

Stay downtown

Downtown is the most practical base for a car-free first visit. The Old State Capitol, Mississippi riverfront, museums and several central landmarks can be reached on foot.

The Louisiana State Capitol area is also close enough to form part of the same general sightseeing zone.

Use rideshare strategically

LSU, Mid City, Bluebonnet Swamp and other attractions are more dispersed. Local transit may help with some journeys, while taxis or rideshare services can be more practical when time matters.

Always check current transit routes and schedules rather than relying on older travel information.

Know the limitations

A car becomes considerably more useful if you want to visit plantation sites, St. Francisville, wetlands or other destinations outside central Baton Rouge.

For a one- or two-day city break, however, you can avoid renting a vehicle by choosing accommodation carefully and grouping your activities.

Keep the itinerary compact and let downtown do most of the work.
