Getting to and Around Baton Rouge

Plan your journey to Baton Rouge and discover the easiest ways to explore Louisiana’s capital and the surrounding region.

Baton Rouge is located in southeastern Louisiana, approximately 80 miles northwest of New Orleans.

The city is relatively easy to reach by plane or car, making it a convenient destination for visitors exploring Louisiana and the American South.

However, Baton Rouge covers a large geographical area, so choosing the right transportation is important when planning your visit.

Flying to Baton Rouge

Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport is the city’s main passenger airport.

Located north of downtown, it offers domestic flight connections through several major American airline hubs.

International visitors can reach Baton Rouge through connecting flights at larger airports.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is another option, particularly if you are planning to combine Baton Rouge with a visit to New Orleans.

From either airport, you can continue your journey by rental car, taxi or other available ground transportation.

Travelling by Car

Baton Rouge is located at the intersection of several important highways.

Interstate 10 connects the city with New Orleans to the southeast and Lafayette to the west.

Interstate 12 provides an alternative route towards destinations east of Baton Rouge, while Interstate 110 connects downtown with Interstate 10.

Driving from New Orleans to Baton Rouge generally takes around one and a half hours, depending on traffic conditions.

Traffic around Baton Rouge can be heavy, particularly during rush hour and major sporting events.

Getting Around Baton Rouge

The Capital Area Transit System, known as CATS, operates local bus services throughout parts of Baton Rouge.

However, many attractions are spread across the city, and public transportation may not be the most convenient option for every journey.

Walking is pleasant in downtown Baton Rouge, particularly around the State Capitol and Mississippi Riverfront.

Do You Need a Car?

If you are mainly visiting downtown Baton Rouge, you may be able to explore several attractions on foot or using taxis and rideshare services.

However, I recommend renting a car if you want to visit the LSU campus, explore attractions outside downtown or continue your journey through Louisiana.

Plan Your Baton Rouge Visit

For a first visit, I recommend spending at least two or three days in Baton Rouge.

Begin with the historic landmarks downtown, explore the Mississippi Riverfront and make time to enjoy the city’s restaurants.

If you have additional time, consider combining your visit with a trip to New Orleans, Lafayette or other destinations in southern Louisiana.

Baton Rouge is an excellent starting point for discovering the history, culture and distinctive flavours of Louisiana.
