St. Francisville

St. Francisville lies north of Baton Rouge and makes an easy change of pace from the state capital. The small town is known for historic architecture, tree-lined surroundings and access to sites connected with the complicated history of the surrounding region.

Walk the town

The centre is compact enough that you can slow down and explore rather than moving constantly between major attractions. Historic buildings and local businesses give the visit a very different rhythm from Baton Rouge.

Approach history carefully

The wider area includes plantation-era sites. As elsewhere in Louisiana, these should be understood through the history of slavery and the lives of enslaved people, not simply admired as attractive old estates.

Before visiting an individual historic property, look at how it interprets that history and whose stories are included.

Make it a relaxed excursion

Combine a few hours in St. Francisville with one carefully chosen nearby historic or natural site rather than trying to collect every attraction in the area.

A car is the practical way to make the trip from Baton Rouge.

St. Francisville adds another scale to a Louisiana itinerary: after New Orleans and Baton Rouge, a smaller Mississippi River community helps show that the state’s story is spread far beyond its two best-known cities.
