From historic landmarks and fascinating museums to Mississippi River views and delicious Louisiana food, discover some of Baton Rouge’s most memorable experiences.
Baton Rouge offers an enjoyable combination of history, culture, outdoor attractions and traditional Southern hospitality.
Whether you are visiting for a weekend or including the city in a longer Louisiana road trip, there are plenty of interesting places to explore.
Here are some experiences I would recommend including in your itinerary.
Visit the Louisiana State Capitol
The Louisiana State Capitol is one of Baton Rouge’s most recognisable landmarks.
Standing 450 feet tall, it is the tallest state capitol building in the United States.
The building’s impressive architecture and surrounding gardens make it an interesting place to visit.
When the observation deck is open, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Baton Rouge and the Mississippi River.
Explore the Old State Capitol
Louisiana’s Old State Capitol is a beautiful Gothic Revival building overlooking the Mississippi River.
Its striking architecture, colourful stained-glass dome and historical exhibitions make it one of the city’s most interesting cultural attractions.
It is particularly worth visiting if you enjoy history and architecture.
Discover the USS Kidd
The USS Kidd is a historic World War II destroyer located along the Mississippi River.
Visitors can explore the ship and learn about its naval history through exhibitions and displays.
It is a memorable attraction for anyone interested in military history and historic vessels.
Visit the LSU Rural Life Museum
The LSU Rural Life Museum offers a fascinating introduction to Louisiana’s rural past.
Its collection of historic buildings, agricultural equipment and cultural exhibits provides insight into everyday life in the region during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Enjoy the Mississippi Riverfront
Take a relaxing walk along the Mississippi River and enjoy views of the water, bridges and surrounding city.
The riverfront is particularly attractive around sunset.
Discover Louisiana’s Food Scene
Make time to explore Baton Rouge’s restaurants and local food traditions.
Try gumbo, jambalaya, po’boys or seasonal crawfish dishes.
My advice is to combine the State Capitol, Old State Capitol and Mississippi Riverfront during your first day. These attractions offer a wonderful introduction to Baton Rouge’s history and atmosphere.
