Downtown Baton Rouge is the easiest area for a first-time visitor to explore on foot. The Mississippi River, government buildings, museums and several major landmarks sit relatively close together.
It is also where Baton Rouge feels most clearly like a state capital.
Start with the landmarks
The Old State Capitol and modern Louisiana State Capitol provide two completely different architectural experiences. Museums and the riverfront fill the space between them with more context about Louisiana.
The Mississippi itself deserves attention. Walk towards the levee and watch the river traffic rather than treating the water as background scenery.
Stay or just visit?
Downtown can be a convenient base if your priority is sightseeing and you prefer to walk to several attractions. Other parts of Baton Rouge may suit you better if LSU, neighbourhood restaurants or a particular event dominates the trip.
As in most American downtown areas, activity can vary considerably between weekday business hours, evenings and weekends. Use normal urban awareness and check current local conditions.
I would give downtown at least half a day. Baton Rouge is spread out, but this compact area contains enough history, architecture and river scenery to provide a strong introduction before you begin exploring farther afield.
