New Orleans is close enough to Baton Rouge to tempt visitors into a day trip, and it can certainly be done. The more important question is whether one day is enough for what you want from the city.
Start early
Driving conditions on the corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans can vary considerably, so leave margin rather than building a minute-by-minute itinerary around an ideal travel time.
Once you arrive, park and focus on one or two areas instead of trying to cross the entire city.
Choose a theme
A first-time visitor might concentrate on the French Quarter and nearby Mississippi riverfront. Others may prefer museums, music, food or neighbourhood architecture.
New Orleans rewards slow exploration, so every extra attraction you add reduces the time available to actually experience the streets.
Consider staying overnight
If New Orleans is one of the main reasons for your Louisiana trip, I would stay there rather than repeatedly commuting from Baton Rouge. A day trip makes more sense when Baton Rouge is your primary base and you simply want a taste of the city.
Do not drink and drive; arrange appropriate transportation if nightlife is part of the plan.
Baton Rouge and New Orleans are different enough that seeing both improves a Louisiana trip. Just avoid treating one as a substitute for the other.
