Louisiana’s Old State Capitol looks more like a castle than a government building. Its Gothic Revival design, hilltop position and colourful interior make it one of the most distinctive historic structures in Baton Rouge.
The building served as Louisiana’s statehouse during the 19th and early 20th centuries before the modern skyscraper capitol took over.
See both capitols
I would visit the old and new state capitols on the same day. The contrast between them says something about changing ideas of power, architecture and Louisiana politics.
Inside, exhibitions have traditionally explored political history and the building itself. Current opening arrangements and exhibits should be checked before your visit.
Walk towards the river
The Old State Capitol sits close to the Mississippi and other downtown attractions, making it easy to combine with museums and the riverfront.
Do not just take a photograph of the exterior and leave. The interior architecture is a major part of the experience when access is available.
Baton Rouge can sometimes be overshadowed by New Orleans in Louisiana itineraries, but landmarks like this show why the capital deserves time of its own. It is unusual, photogenic and closely connected with the political history that has shaped the state.
