Louisiana Art & Science Museum

The Louisiana Art & Science Museum gives downtown Baton Rouge another useful indoor stop, particularly when the weather is hot or rainy. Housed near the Mississippi River, it brings art and science together rather than forcing visitors to choose between two completely separate museums.

A broad museum

Exhibitions can range from visual art to science and astronomy, which makes the museum particularly practical for groups with different interests.

Because exhibitions and programmes change, check what is currently showing before deciding how much time to allow.

Easy to combine with downtown

The location is one of the museum’s strengths. You can include it in a day with the Old State Capitol, Mississippi riverfront and other central attractions without repeatedly moving the car.

That makes it especially useful on a first Baton Rouge visit when you want variety but do not want to spend the entire day driving across the city.

I would not necessarily build a Louisiana trip around this museum alone. Its value comes from how naturally it complements the rest of downtown. After several hours of political history, stepping into art, science or a planetarium programme can reset the day before you return outside to the river.
